Professional biography

Moving from Greece to Britain, I became interested in the social psychological aspects of immigration processes, particularly in the dynamics of identity in border-crossing practices and intercultural encounters. I have studied national, ethnic and cultural identities in my doctoral and postdoctoral research. Before joining the Open University in September 2013, I worked for several years at the London School of Economics where I also completed my PhD.

Research interests

My primary research interests lie in the social psychology of citizenship, immigration and identity in diverse societies. I am interested in the relationship between institutional arrangements about immigration and everyday ‘lay’ understandings and experiences of these issues. My research includes work on British citizenship and immigration focusing particularly on the process of naturalisation whereby migrants acquire formal citizenship status. I have also researched intercultural relations in school settings, studying how we can develop effective multicultural educational policies in the context of Britain and other culturally diverse societies. I am currently working on a research project on constructions of European citizenship.

I am a member of the Centre for Citizenship, Identities and Governance (CCIG) at the Open University and I co-direct its research programme on Migration and Belongings.

I am Editor of the online peer-reviewed journal Papers on Social Representations.

Teaching interests

I co-chair the production of the new third-level social psychology module DD317 Advancing Social Psychology. I am also in the module team of DD307 Social Psychology: critical perspectives on self and others. Previously, I was involved in the production of DD210 Living Psychology: from the everyday to the extraordinary
