Title: ‘Ordinary Citizenship’: Anthropological Approaches
Facilitator: Prof. Catherine Neveu
Anthropological approaches to citizenship processes have underlined how fruitful it can be to take into account “ordinary” spaces and people in order to grasp and analyse them, and include in the frame practices and actors that more “classical” approaches might tend to ignore. The very notion of ordinariness should however be defined and located, in particular in its relations with notions such as Isin’s “acts of citizenship” or “active citizenship”. This seminar will rely on empirical research carried out in France and other contexts and discusses the gains to be obtained by exploring citizenship processes “through the ordinary”.
