Elton Barker, Professor of Greek Literature and Culture at The Open University, has just published his co-edited volume, Barker, Bobou and Raja (eds), The Oxford Handbook of Digital Classical Studies.

In our lifetime, information computing technology has revolutionized everyday life to such an extent that it is now integral to academic research and teaching. Classical Studies has been no less affected by the transformational shift in the ways in which information is processed, synthesized, presented, and published. Yet, despite the ubiquitous importance of digital tools, methods, and approaches, as well as the rise in courses in Digital Humanities offered by universities around the world, up until this point students and researchers have lacked any kind of general state-of-the-art guide as to how any of these developments apply specifically to Classical Studies.

This handbook addresses this need by supplying the various subdisciplines within Classics (philology, epigraphy, papyrology, history, literature, archaeology, numismatics, ancient art history) with a much-needed, easy-to-use resource to which researchers, teachers, and students can turn for a comprehensive overview. The handbook offers broad introductions to the different methods and approaches that have appeared and evolved over the last forty years, as well as case studies that demonstrate various ways in which digital applications in both theory and practice have impacted Classical scholarship. Individual chapters also provide a history of digitally based work, examine issues raised by the digital turn, and discuss examples in which digital methodologies are critically advancing the field, in ways that will also be of use for teaching and wider public outreach.
