Dr Michael Glenday

I attended the Universities of Dundee, Purdue, and Kent at Canterbury. For over thirty-five years I have taught courses in literature and other arts, as well as Access courses for the Open University in the North West of England, mainly in Manchester and Liverpool. I have held appointments at the University of Kent (American Literature) and the Universities of Manchester (American Literature) and Liverpool (Latin American Studies), teaching American, British and other European literatures, as well as U.S. film studies, photography and visual culture.

My research interests are mainly in modern and contemporary American literature. My last book was F. Scott Fitzgerald (Palgrave Macmillan, London and New York, 2012) and I am co-editor and co-founder of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Review, published annually by the Pennsylvania State University Press. My second book, Norman Mailer (Macmillan, London and New York, 1995), links also to my current post on the Board of Editors of the Mailer Review, published annually by the University of South Florida. Other books include Saul Bellow and the Decline of Humanism (Macmillan, London, 1990), a publication in the Macmillan New Directions in American Studies series edited by Professor Eric Homberger, and a co-edited collection of essays by British and American scholars, American Mythologies: Essays on American Literature (Liverpool University Press, and Oxford University Press, New York, 2005). Recent essays include 'F. Scott Fitzgerald and the Great Depression', in F. Scott Fitzgerald in Context, ed. Bryant Mangum (Cambridge University Press, London and New York,  2013) and ‘Fly Boys and Angels: Mailer on the Moon’ in the Mailer Review (Fall, 2015). I am a published poet, and was a founding member and first co-convenor of the OU Arts Teaching and Scholarship Network.
