I joined the Open University in 1976, was appointed to a chair in History in 2003 and retired in 2015. Since the 1980s my research has moved from English civil war history to the history of gender in the early modern period and to the history of the early years of the eighteenth-century financial revolution, with a special interest in women investors and women, wealth and property. I am now working on the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century social history of Oxford and on nineteenth-century women historians.
