Professional biography

I am now retired, after teaching in the department for fifteen years (principally on courses to do with Roman culture and society (such as A428 The Roman Family and AA309 Culture, Identity, and Power in the Roman Empire').  Before that I had taught  Roman art part time at Cambridge.

Research interests

  • Roman art of the later empire, in the private sphere. The significance and iconography of images used in the decoration of houses, and for funerary commemorations
  • Sarcophagi from the city of Rome
  • Early Christian art
  • The re-use of ancient Roman sarcophagi in post-classical settings (as spolia).
