Professional biography

I am a full-time PhD student in English and Creative Writing, and my research is AHRC funded through the Open-Oxford-Cambridge DTP.

Prior to returning to education I was a full-time writer, and have published ten novels for young adults. My work focuses on Feminism and nuanced portrayals of marginalised identities, and draws strongly on world folklore and mythology. My writing has been shortlisted for the Branford Boase award, the Lancashire Book of the Year award, the Leeds Book of the Year award and the James Tiptree Jnr. Prize, and won the Hillingdon Book award, The Great Britain Sasakawa Prize, a USBBY Outstanding International Book listing, and a Junior Library Guild Selection, among others. Over the past decade I have run over one hundred creative writing and reading workshops in schools and libraries, and from 2017-2019 I was the Royal Literary Fund Fellow at York St. John University. My writing has been supported through grants from Arts Council England, the Society of Authors and the Royal Literary Fund.

I graduated from Kingston University in 2020 with a master's degree in Creative Writing, with distinction, and was the winner of the Kingston University 2019-20 Creative Writing MA Prize for Outstanding Academic Achievement. My dissertation was supervised by Hanif Kureishi.

Research interests

My PhD focuses on the canon of contemporary timeslip fiction, and seeks to utilise creative writing to explore subjective human experiences of time, memory, and history, and explore how these can be linked to concepts of non-linear space-time in modern theoretical physics, using both Romantic imaginative techniques and 'realistic' literary mimesis. My supervisors are Dr Joanne Reardon and Dr Ed Hogan.
