Melanie is a social psychologist with an interest in disability and equalities. She has been a researcher in the NHS and The University of Sheffield before joining the Open University as a post-graduate research student in 2019. She is passionate about social justice and dismantling the barriers that prevent disadvantaged people from being heard.
Melanie is currently working on a PhD titled Problematising Power Relations Between People with Learning Disabilities, Carers, and Professionals. She uses discourse analysis to understand the ways people talk when they are talking about learning disabilities. Her supervisors are Dr Jean McAvoy and Professor Rose Capdevila.
Melanie is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and has written undergraduate and masters level modules for the University of Sheffield and the OU.
Melanie teaches on a variety of The Open University undergraduate social science modules including DD102 (Introducing the Social Sciences), and E232 (Exploring Childhood and Youth), E219 (Psychology of Childhood and Youth).
