Melissa Morton, University of Edinburgh presents ‘“Whoosh” and they’re gone’: Music and Sound in TV Idents.

Idents, short for ‘channel identification’, are part of the interstitial, or in-between, spaces of television and feature a logo, music, and sound design. Ranging from the echoing chimes of BBC Two’s animated curved logo to the ‘Ta-dum’ mnemonic accompanying Netflix’s red ‘N’, idents can be highly imaginative pieces of visual and sonic branding. This paper explores the production processes for composers and graphic designers in creating idents, drawing on case studies and in-depth practitioner interviews. In doing so, it provides insights into the collaboration between visual and sonic disciplines in the production of idents and aims to highlight the value and functions of music and sound within these uniquely compressed audiovisual texts.
