Prof Clare Taylor and colleagues in Art History have secured a funded PhD studentship with the Open-Oxford-Cambridge Doctoral Training Partnership (OOC-DTP). This is a Collaborative Doctoral Award with Transport for London (TfL). Applications for ‘Art on the Underground, 1986-2020: contemporary legacies of a modernist project’ closed on 7 January and the successful candidate will commence their studies in October 2025. The studentship focuses on the artworks produced by Art on the Underground, and offers the opportunity to consider how contemporary artists have responded to the Underground’s early aims in their projects. The studentship also involves the chance to develop a public outcome, such as contributing to a network-wide Transport for London poster campaign, producing station leaflets, or sharing their research via an event. The PhD student will work with the archives of Transport for London, including material held at the London Transport Museum, as well as with new art produced for Art on the Underground.
