The Open University Sociology department is pleased to announce the Professor Stuart Hall Dissertation Prize, awarded annually to three outstanding Sociology dissertations that contribute to discussions on issues relevant to the field of sociology, with a particular focus on social justice and equality.
This prize recognises D328, Principles of Social Research: Sociology Special Project Module, student dissertations that demonstrate originality, analytical thinking, and a strong understanding of sociological themes and methodologies. Named in honour of Professor Stuart Hall, an influential scholar in sociology and cultural studies who worked at the Open University until 1997, the award seeks to acknowledge and support emerging sociologists.
All Sociology dissertations submitted for D328 are automatically eligible for consideration. The award will be given to the three students whose dissertations receive the highest scores for their EMAs. In the event of two EMAs receiving identical scores, a panel of departmental members will assess them based on criteria such as originality, quality, and relevance to contemporary sociological issues. Each year, the selected dissertations exemplify academic excellence and make a meaningful contribution to sociology.
The recipients of the Professor Stuart Hall Dissertation Prize will receive a certificate of achievement, recognition on the Open University Sociology department’s website, and a small monetary prize in the form of book tokens. Additionally, winners may have opportunities to present their research within the department and the broader academic community. The winning dissertations will - with the students’ permission - be published on the module website. The prize highlights the winning dissertations’ societal relevance, supporting the kind of critical, reflective research that embodies Professor Hall’s legacy.
All EMAs will be automatically considered for the Professor Stuart Hall Dissertation Prize.
