Q: Will it be possible to register for R86 alongside doing an external FHEQ level 4 counselling training course (which is mapped on SCoPEd framework ‘Therapist A’ and equips you to working with clients)?

The way R86 is set up means that you need to successfully complete the relevant external counselling qualification before you can register/embark on this qualification.

Q: What are the options for logging practice/supervision hours in this qualification that will help me gaining Column B status with my professional body?

In order to support you in gaining Column B status with your professional body, you can use the e-portfolio tool provided in this qualification to log hours beyond the minimum required for the qualification. For example you could choose to log:

• Historical hours (completed after the Column A training and before enrolment on this qualification).
• Hours completed during module enrolment that do not meet the qualification requirements (e.g. if you are a trained couple counsellor you could log couple counselling hours).

Please ensure that you are familiar with any restrictions regarding eligible practice hours (including placement type and supervision/supervisor qualifications) set by your professional body/the SCoPEd partners regarding the 450 hours of practice they require for Column B competence.

Q: Where can I find external counselling courses that will be accepted for R86 level 1, and what sort of thing should I be looking for when searching for courses?

For the external counselling training components of R86 at level 1, we generally accept UK counselling courses at FHEQ level 4 from an approved provider. We will accept courses as external counselling training components for this qualification if they map onto the SCoPEd framework ‘Therapist A’ competencies, meeting the following criteria: 

• An FHEQ Level 4/SCQF level 7(or equivalent) Diploma minimum
• A minimum of 300 training hours
• A minimum of 100 supervised client hours.

Please be aware that before you can embark on any FHEQ Level 4 counselling training you will typcially first need to complete introductory courses in counselling skills and studies. Training providers providing FHEQ Level 4 counselling training often have an entry level certificate programme, and completing this is often an entry requirement for students enrolling on their level 4 counselling training.

Q: I don't live in the UK. Can I still study R86 BSc Counselling with the OU?

No, the qualification is only available for students in the UK due to the different regulations and standards in the field of counselling and psychotherapy in other countries.
