British Library ‘Chinese Britain’ Exhibition: November 2022 – April 2023

BCSN co-founders Alex Tickell and Lucienne Loh are guest curators on a British Library exhibition planned to open in the BL St Pancras Paccar 2 gallery in November 2022. The exhibition will showcase British Library holdings, loaned items and images relating to the history and cultures of Chinese communities in Britain. The exhibition narrates this history from the perspective of Chinese British communities and is supported by Chinese community groups across UK regions and nations.

Collaborating partners include: CCCB, Wai Yin, SACU, Dragons of the Pool

British Chinese Literature database

The BCSN is involved in a long-term archiving and database project to build a coherent research resource on the Anglophone literary heritage of this under-represented group. The database project is led by Tickell and incorporates original research by BCSN member Tessa Thorniley. The archive, which will include a limited digital repository of early publications, will be an essential, developing open-access resource for students, researchers and creative practitioners.

Chinese Communities in Britain Oral Histories Project

This is an interdisciplinary project which seeks to bring basic corpus linguistics methods to bear on the rich archive of oral history projects which have been undertaken by Chinese community groups from all across the UK. In particular, the project focuses on narratives which explore the experience of the Chinese who work in the restaurant trade or take-away industry.
