This time-critical research looks at the how international students in the UK have been affected by the Covid-19 lock-down, as well as experiences as lock-down restrictions are lifted. The project will document, analyse and give voice to the diverse experiences within international student communities.
We partnered with UKCISA to extend the reach of our survey, and our findings:
Gunjan Sondhi is a lecturer in Geography at The Open University, with prior postdoctoral experience in leading universities in Canada, Singapore and the UK. Her research interests focus on the interplay between gender, work, education and migration/mobility with an emphasis on international student and highly skilled mobility. This work has stretched across South and Southeast Asia, North America and the UK/EU. Gunjan has contributed to international level policy dialogues in relation to international student and skilled migration.
Parvati Raghuram is a Professor in Geography and Migration at The Open University, UK. She has published widely on re-theorising migration of international students and skilled migrants, particularly women in the information technology (IT) sector and medicine. She has written for policy audiences having co-authored research papers for a number of think-thanks and international organisations.
James is a research associate working with the Geography department at The Open University. He holds a PhD in Informatics. His interests centre on applying advanced statistical approaches for the benefit of social science research, with special reference to the relationships between migration/mobility patterns and education, gender, race and work.
Our findings will guide a broad array of established networks from student bodies and higher education institutions to governmental departments. We endeavour to develop debate for as wide an audience as possible by engaging with academic, new, old and social media platforms.
Funding for this project is provided by the Strategic Research and Innovation funds, and the IDII Strategic Research Area.
The UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) is a key project partner.
