Space Ethics Research Group

The SEG was set up to meet an urgent need to develop an ethical framework for the UK and European space industry. Its members have directed AHRC, MBR Challenge and UK Space Agency funded projects and serve, or have served, on key committees including the Hague International Space Resources Governance Working Group and the Royal Society Space Policy Working Group.  It has advised and collaborated with several tech startups and space companies. Members are frequently asked to speak at workshops and conferences, including for NASA and MIT. Our members’ work has been referenced in the media, including Al Jazeera (English) and WIRED.

The SEG has published widely on space ethics and frequently runs interdisciplinary seminars on space and society. Its particular concern is space governance, the marginalisation of environmental concerns in space, the issues posed by space debris, and mega-constellations. It argues for a more democratic and sustainable international space policy.

Applications to join our existing cohort of graduate students are invited. Details of how to apply can be found here. The research interests of the members of the SEG can be found via their webpages.
