Hope Alfa and the Sleeping Giant - Christopher Portelli

Selected entry of the Global Challenges: Hope and Local Action arts competition

Christopher’s story ‘Hope Alfa and the Sleeping Giant’ beautifully depicted the threat of the climate crisis on our unique Earth, by exploring the challenge of committing its life to digital memory.

Accompanying the Voyager I and II spacecraft, launched in 1977 on their Ad-Astra journey, there are two gold-plated discs. If, by chance, in five hundred million years or five thousand million years, a spacefaring civilization happens to find one or other of the craft on their transit through interstellar space, either craft’s disc would faithfully reproduce the sights and sounds selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth.
