Maria Lindmäe's reflections on the sonic atmospheres of marketplaces published in cultural geographies

In her article '“¡Tengo gloria bendita!”: pitching and the sonic production of place atmospheres under increasing marketplace regulation', Maria, who is a postdoctoral researcher in our Spanish team, argues that market traders' pitching is a professional skill and a cultural practice that is illegitimized by market regulations that aim to invoke civic behavior and stage representational place atmospheres. However, pitching contests dominant place narratives by involving creativity, affect and a political desire of recognition of difference and it can therefore shape more diverse marketplace atmospheres where the meanings of order and control are not unequivocal.

Do read her work which is illustrated by numerous humorous pitching extracts straight from the field. If you lack open access to it, you can write to her via maria.lindmae@upf.edu

You can also hear some traders' cries and during our upcoming webinar, where she will be sharing some snap insights of her sonic work on markets.
