When you study philosophy with us you will become a philosopher yourself – the only way to learn it is to do it. There is no serious alternative to having a go at answering the big questions yourself using the work of others to help you do so. It can be daunting at first and many students initially feel they’re not entitled to express their own point of view, but we’ll invite you to jump off at the deep-end and support you all the way.
Even if you’re new to philosophy, which most of our students are, you’ll find plenty of support from fellow students and your tutor. Our study materials contain regular short activities to engage you in philosophical thinking, while also checking you’ve absorbed what you’ve been learning. You’ll be asked to defend a particular point of view to train you in the art of extracting a philosophical argument from the work of an author before developing your own ideas.
Philosophical questions crop up in other disciplines all the time; that means philosophy works very well as something to study alongside other subjects. We offer BA (Honours) qualifications in Philosophy and Psychological Studies, Religion, Philosophy and Ethics and Politics, Philosophy and Economics. You could also choose to study a more general BA (Honours) in Arts and Humanities and, depending which modules you study, you have the option of having one or two specialisms named in your degree, including philosophy. Many students also study philosophy modules as part of an Open Degree.
The skills you will develop while studying philosophy, most notably analytical thinking, decision making and clear communication, are widely applicable to many different careers. Graduates go into careers ranging from law and business analysis to administration and software design.
