Clive Emsley, pioneering historian, and enthusiastic wine connoisseur, born 4 August 1944; died 5 October 2020. We in FASS wish him the fondest of farewells.

Conference: Tobias Smollett at 300: the work of writing

This year marks the three-hundredth anniversary of the birth of the Scottish writer Tobias Smollett (1721–1771). The conference will be hosted by the Institute for English Studies, online via Zoom, in two sessions on 13 and 14 May 2021. The event is free to attend but you will need to register.

Which means business as usual, with a line-up of acclaimed authors, commissioning editors and literary agents on hand to offer tips on the creative process as well as invaluable insight into the world of publishing.

Best practices to recruit and retain woman in tech - lessons from India

The panel discussion will reflect on the best practices learned from India to recruit and retain women in tech. The panellists will reflect on the findings published from Gender, Skilled Migration and IT project (GSM-IT).  The speakers will share what they have learned from the published findings, how they have used the findings to change their practice, and how they might use the findings in the future.

OU funds Creative Writing research with COVID-19 frontline healthcare workers

An Open University COVID-19 Rapid Response funding scheme is supporting a series of writing workshops with health care workers in acute care and palliative care in collaboration with the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust. The plan is that this research will lead to the production of a new Creative Writing Handbook for COVID-19 frontline workers.
