Principles

Open Ecologies is guided by the following principles:

  • We believe that solutions to the current climate crisis cannot be implemented, let alone imagined, without working across the disciplinary constructs that define higher education. Our members bridge art history, environmental sciences, political theory, geography, religious studies, classical studies, and design.
  • We share a commitment to the role of creativity in tackling the climate crisis, both in the past and in the future, and ask how it can be a driving force for meaningful change.
  • We challenge the opposition between ‘art and science’ or ‘nature and culture’.
  • We value all kinds of knowledge, and are interested in the space between ‘amateur’ and ‘expert’.
  • We are committed to amplifying awareness of diverse understandings of the world, including indigenous and ‘non-western’ knowledge.
  • We work towards truly equitable access to spaces of nature in society.
