School of Creative Industries

The School of Creative Industries is an ambitious new venture for The Open University. We are in the process of designing a new suite of vocational degrees which combine creative practice, digital skills, industry expertise, and theoretical analysis. The School is driven by the ethos and mission of the OU. Our ambition is to break down the barriers to entry into the creative industries and effect real and meaningful societal change by addressing sector challenges around social mobility, representation, and participation.  We will do this by creating inclusive, innovative, and accessible learning experiences, and by developing key sector partnerships and opportunities for our students. We start this journey with our BA Film and Media degree launching in 2027. Be sure to watch this space for future creative courses at the OU!

Dr James Blake (Head of School, Creative Industries)

The School of Creative Industries brings together practical training with analytical skills and understanding across the creative sectors. It is a home for vocational learning with an emphasis on employability and sector partnerships, digital skills training, and diversity and inclusive learning. It is led by a team with a broad range of expertise, from leading fields in film and media research to experience in professional industry roles.

Alongside The Open University’s long-standing media partnership with the BBC, we also have working relationships with key industry organisations including the BFI and Creative UK, among many other sector organisations.

We are also home to the Open College of the Arts (OCA) which has a long tradition of combining innovative distance learning with creative practice. On their website you will find courses in Fine Art, Painting, Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography, Textiles and Interior Design.

Research

The School is the base of the OU Film and Media Research Group, which is a hub for cross-disciplinary research projects, PhD supervision, and practice-based methodologies.

Qualifications

In 2027, we will launch the BA Film and Media Degree combining professional workflows with emerging technologies and vocational learning at a distance. The degree will focus on the screen industries, digital platforms and broadcast media.
