Angela Charles

Angela completed her BA undergraduate degree in History and Criminology at the University of Essex in 2014, graduating with First Class Honours. This was followed by a MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice at Oxford University in 2015. Angela has worked within the criminal justice sector in a Secure Training Centre, the National Probation Service, and Youth Justice.

Research Interest:

Angela is researching Black women’s experiences in prison, using intersectionality to assess the ways in which race and gender cause the experience of Black female offenders to be unique. This is a qualitative study that used a combination of semi-structured interviews, focus groups and observations.

This research is relevant because Black women make up a disproportionate percentage of the female prison estate. Additionally, the research is timely with global social movements such as Black Lives Matter.

Angela is able to conduct this research due to being on a studentship with the Open University. She is supervised by Dr Deborah Drake and Dr Victoria Cooper both in the Social Policy and Criminology department.

Her interests are around race, gender and the criminal justice system, particularly prisons.

Teaching:

Angela is currently teaching as a Criminology lecturer at The University of Law. She currently teaching modules on the foundations of criminology, Media and crime control, and Drugs and their role within the criminal justice system.
