Postgraduate Research in Art History

The Open University’s PhD Programme in Art History engages with fundamental questions about why visual and material cultures – both past and present – matter in the world today.

We take students through a complete journey, from an undergraduate degree and taught postgraduate degree, right through to the PhD.

Key dates:

The PhD programme in Art History has a single deadline each year for all applications, for both funded and self-funded students. All PhD students begin their studies on 1st October of that same calendar year. You must read this page Open-Oxford-Cambridge AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership - Open University/AHRC PhD Studentships carefully for the OU application form and to apply for the current AHRC finding scheme through the Open-Oxford-Cambridge Doctoral Training Partnership, if you wish to be considered for funding.

If you intend to study part-time and do not wish to apply for public funding: you may register to start on 1 February 2024 instead of October. Contact us in good time if you are unsure.
