David Debenham

Professional Biography

I have worked in education since 2001 and with the Open University as an Associate Lecturer since 2010, on business and economics modules mainly. My most recent fulltime role was as programme director at the London Institute of Banking and Finance. Previously I have been the director in two other businesses, delivering educational quality assurance, business growth and international post graduate programmes in strategic leadership. Prior to these roles I taught business studies, financial studies and leadership.

Research Interest

Since 2020: The influences and characteristics of household debt in The United Kingdom since the global financial crisis. Current interests in this area are:

  • definitions and measurement of differing levels of debt to include non-vulnerability, vulnerability, over indebtedness and severe over indebtedness
  • trends in debt accumulation across time, demographics and types of debt
  • skills associated with avoiding problematic debt
  • the effects of economic policy, including regulation and deregulation of markets, on household debt
  • the measurement and trends associated with informal household debt
  • the immediate and long term effects of COVID-19 on household debt
