OU Historian publishes piece on smoking and vaping in history

A member of the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) lighting the cigarette of one of her convalescent patients at the Royal Naval Hospital, Chatham during the First World War.

Dr Michael Reeve, Lecturer in Modern British History, has published a brief opinion article for History & Policy, an international network that connects historians with the policy world. ‘Smoking and Vaping in Historical Perspective’ focuses on Michael’s ongoing research project into tobacco consumption and modern war in Britain, and particularly the association of smoking with stress relief. It underlines the insights history can bring to those working in public health policy and education today.

As well as producing publications on this topic, Michael is also leading a policy-focused project as part of the Open Societal Challenges programme, under the title,  'The 'pernicious habit': the enduring popularity of nicotine in everyday life'. With the aid of funds from OpenARC, in March 2025 Michael will join colleagues from the Military Welfare History Network to speak about this same topic, at the European Social Sciences History Conference in Leiden, Netherlands.
