Postgraduate Research in History

Research degrees in History

The Open University’s PhD Programme in History enables you to undertake innovative and exciting research which makes an original contribution to the field of history.

As a postgraduate research student, you will work with two co-supervisors, allowing you to benefit from the expertise and feedback of two academics. You will be joining a friendly and dynamic community of researchers and will take advantage of our year-round programme of workshops, seminars, and training.

The History Department currently has 25 members of staff engaged in original, rigorous and significant research. These colleagues are ideally placed to supervise postgraduate research students on a wide range of subjects and places, stretching from the 16th century to the end of the 20th century, and encompassing many different types of history.

Key dates:

The deadline for all PhD applications, including funded and self funded students, is midday (GMT) Tuesday 9 January 2024.  All PhD students begin their studies on 1 October of that same calendar year. We do not have a February intake for the PhD programme in History.
