Scottish History module: guidance for students

CDDR301 Modern Scottish History 1707-1997
CDDR321 Medieval and Early Modern Scottish History, c.1100-1707

Both modules are offered in collaboration with the University of Dundee. They can count towards Q01 History and R14 Arts and Humanities. They can also count towards the Open degree (QD).

For more information on the content of the modules, visit our History module page or the University of Dundee website (see below). To find out more about registering on Modern Scottish History 1707-1997 and Medieval and Early Modern Scottish History, c. 1100-1707, visit our collaborative schemes page.

As these modules are owned and administered by the University of Dundee rather than the Open University, they are subject to some different regulations in terms of registration, finance and credit transfer. The Open University regularly reviews the module information provided by the University of Dundee, including retention data and student satisfaction feedback, as well as any updates on the contents and delivery of the course to ensure they meet the requirements of our qualifications.

All students planning to study these modules should read the information below carefully before registering for the modules.

Students should contact their Student Support Team in the usual way with any queries relating to counting these modules towards an OU qualification. Queries regarding finance or the content of the modules themselves should be directed to the University of Dundee.

At a glance…

  • The modules have been developed by the University of Dundee in partnership with the OU’s History Department.
  • Each module is worth 60 credits at OU level 3.
  • Each module is a one-year, part-time module (October to June).
  • Each module is assessed by coursework only. There is no exam.
  • Teaching is through distance learning, including discussion forums and online teaching sessions. Students are allocated to a tutor who will mark their assignment and give help and advice on the course.
  • The modules are optional in Q01 History and R14 Arts and Humanities.

What to expect

  • The modules are owned and administered by the University of Dundee. This means that whilst students are studying them, support will be provided by the University of Dundee and students will be subject to their rules and regulations.
  • Students have full access to the University of Dundee Library including online support during the modules. Due to licensing reasons, students cannot also access online materials via the OU Library (unless they are also studying an OU module).
  • Students enrolled on the modules can get help from their OU Student Support Team in relation to future study and careers advice. For questions related to the modules themselves, such as what they are about, how they are taught, help for students with disabilities, etc., support is provided by the University of Dundee.
  • Dundee is a joint data controller with the OU, and Dundee and the OU will each process data according to their privacy notices. Each student’s name, ID and end of module grade will be shared by Dundee with the OU for the award of collaborative credit.
  • Any complaints about the modules will be handled by the University of Dundee. Students should follow the procedures they set out.
  • Students enrolled on the modules will remain able to interact with the wider OU History community via the History forum on the Arts and Humanities study website, and will retain access to their StudentHome page, including History skills resources.
  • The credits gained from CDDR301 and CDDR321 must go through an additional credit transfer process to be counted against your OU degree. As a result, students taking CDDR301 or CDDR321 as their final module will receive their degree results slightly later than normal. This may be too late to participate in some OU graduation ceremonies that same year.
