Economics seminar series: Health and industrial policy in and after Covid-19: Economic context from UNIDO's Industrial Development Report (IDR) 2022

Abstract:

Prof. Smita Srinivas (associated with OU Economics, DPP) will cover key economic theory, methods and issues on institutional change from her background paper for the UNIDO Industrial Development Report 2022 on Sustainable Industrial Development. The talk will compare and contrast three different industrial cases for healthcare during Covid-19 , with implications for economics and industrial policies going forward.

Fernando Santiago will be a discussant also speaking about the process of putting the economics together on Industrial Development Report 2022 and positioning these background cases and the wider ambit of the report and its rethinking on policy engagement. Fernando Santiago is Industrial Policy Officer at the Department of Policy Research and Statistics (PRS) of UNIDO.

Speakers:

Professor Smita Srinivas (associated with OU Economics, DPP)

Smita Srinivas is Professorial Research Fellow in the Economics Department and the Development Policy and Practice (DPP) group at the Open University UK. She founded the Technological Change Lab (TCLab) which focuses on linking economic theory to developmental practice including the integration of industry priorities with health and ecology.  She serves on the advisory board or scientific committees of journals such as Innovation and Development, Review of Evolutionary Political Economy, and others in economics and development.

Her research is both theoretical in evolutionary and institutional economics as well as focused on social impact and policy design and planning. She is the 2021 Clarence E. Ayres Scholar designate by the Association for Evolutionary Economics (AFEE, USA) for outstanding work by an international scholar in the area of institutional economics, and the 2015 Myrdal Prize author of “Market Menagerie: Health and Development in Late Industrial States” (Stanford University Press, 2012) from the European Association for Evolutionary Political Economy (EAEPE). She currently acts as India lead on an OU-led, ESRC-funded 4-country research collaboration on Innovation for cancer care in Africa (ICCA) and is a Visiting Professor at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, TIFR, India.

Fernando Santiago (UNIDO) 

Fernando Santiago is an Industrial Policy Officer at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) where he specializes in research and policy advisory services on industrial policy. Santiago is the UNIDO’s focal point for the UN Inter-Agency Task Team on Science, Technology and Innovation for the SDG's. He also serves as member of the Scientific Board of the LALICS Network. His professional experience spans government, academic and private sector organizations in Mexico and Canada. He has published on topics related to innovation, industrial policy and industrial development. Santiago is an economist from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, with post-graduate degrees from SPRU-University of Sussex and UNU-MERIT/University of Maastricht.
