Brass players’ routes into the music profession

This project was aimed at establishing a broad understanding of how brass players in Britain became professional players before the late 20th century. Even in the early 1960s it was unusual for professional players to cite a conservatoire as their main source of education and training. Brass bands were a major source of recruitment, but most were primarily trained in bands of the British military. One of the outcomes of this project was a series of interviews with leading players. The recordings of these interviews and summary transcripts are now deposited in the British Library.
