Sociology: Why Study with Us?

We have a very successful undergraduate teaching programme that focuses on a range of relevant social issues, questions and concerns. We place a strong emphasis on producing innovative modules that engage and inspire our students, and we will introduce you to research methods that you can take into many areas of work. Your studies with The Open University will help you challenge your assumptions about the digital world, everyday life, and culture and society, and will enable you to view the world differently. You can view our courses here.

Our teaching

Our academics work in teams to produce sociology modules. Modules often draw on fields such as history, urban studies, gender studies and science and technology studies, as well as more conventional sociological research and ideas. Consequently, you will find sociology to be rich and far reaching in its concerns, theories and applications. You’ll learn to think critically about many different aspects of the social world in which you live.

How can I combine my studies?

We plan to introduce a BA (Hons) Sociology degree in 2023. In the meantime, or if you’re interested in combining your sociological studies with another subject, you can enrol on a joint honours degree in criminology or study sociology with religious studies. Alternatively, you can choose a specialist sociology route through our social sciences degree, graduating with a BA (Hons) Social Sciences (Sociology).

Sociology and your career

Our qualifications will support you in developing a wide range of key skills that will help you achieve your goals, whatever those might be. There are a number of career options directly related to sociology, particularly in the public sector, but your newly acquired skills will equally be valued in parts of the non-government or private sector.
